Data Analyst Salary in India (2026): Fresher to Senior

Data analyst salary in India for 2026: typical fresher, mid and senior ranges by city and industry, what raises your pay, and how to negotiate better.

Salary portals such as AmbitionBox, Glassdoor and Naukri commonly report data analyst pay in India in roughly these bands: about ₹3–6 LPA for freshers, ₹6–12 LPA with two to five years of experience, and ₹12–20 LPA or more for senior and lead analysts. Your actual number depends heavily on your city, the type of company and how strong your SQL, BI and Python skills are. Treat every figure in this guide as a typical reported range, not a guarantee.

How to read salary numbers in India

Two things confuse almost everyone looking at analyst pay for the first time: what "LPA" includes, and why the monthly credit is smaller than expected.

LPA means lakhs per annum, and it almost always refers to CTC (cost to company). CTC is everything the employer spends on you in a year, which can include variable pay, the employer's provident fund contribution, gratuity, insurance and sometimes a one-time joining bonus. Your in-hand monthly salary is what remains after those non-monthly parts and your own deductions are taken out.

A worked example: ₹6 LPA CTC

Here is an illustrative breakdown. Real structures vary by company, so always ask HR for your own salary annexure.

  • CTC: ₹6,00,000
  • Variable pay at 10% of CTC, paid yearly and linked to performance: ₹60,000
  • Basic salary, if set at 40% of CTC (a common structure): ₹2,40,000
  • Employer PF at 12% of basic: ₹28,800
  • Gratuity provision at about 4.81% of basic: ₹11,544
  • Fixed gross paid monthly: ₹6,00,000 minus the three items above, about ₹4,99,700 a year or roughly ₹41,600 a month
  • Employee PF at 12% of monthly basic (₹20,000): ₹2,400 a month
  • Professional tax in many states: about ₹200 a month

That leaves roughly ₹39,000 a month in hand before income tax. Whether you owe income tax at this level depends on the regime you choose and the current year's slabs and rebates, so check the latest rules rather than assuming. The lesson is simple: when you compare two offers, compare the fixed monthly pay, not just the headline CTC.

Data analyst salary by experience

These bands reflect ranges commonly reported on salary portals. Individual offers can fall well outside them in either direction.

Freshers (0–1 year): roughly ₹3–6 LPA

The lower end is typical for MIS and reporting roles, smaller firms, tier-2 cities and large batch hiring by IT services companies. The upper end is more common at GCCs, product companies and funded startups, usually for candidates who can show solid SQL, Power BI and two or three real projects. Graduates from top-tier institutes sometimes receive offers above this range through campus placements.

Mid-level (2–5 years): roughly ₹6–12 LPA

This is where skill differences start to show clearly in pay. An analyst who only maintains Excel reports tends to stay near the lower end. One who owns metrics for a business area, writes complex SQL, automates work with Python and presents findings to leadership tends to move toward the upper end, and sometimes past it.

Senior analysts (5–8 years): roughly ₹12–20 LPA

Senior analysts are paid for judgement as much as for technique: choosing which questions matter, designing metrics, reviewing others' work and influencing decisions. Titles at this level include Senior Data Analyst, Lead Analyst and Analytics Consultant.

Lead and manager roles (8+ years): often ₹20 LPA and above

At this level the range becomes very wide. An analytics manager leading a team at a large GCC or product company can earn several times what a lead at a small services firm earns. Many people at this stage also move sideways into product analytics, analytics engineering or data science, each with its own pay band. If you are weighing those paths, see data analyst vs data scientist vs business analyst.

Data analyst salary by city

City affects salary mainly because of where well-paying employers cluster. These are general patterns in reported data, not fixed rules.

  • Bengaluru: usually at the top of reported ranges, driven by GCCs, product companies and startups
  • Hyderabad: close to Bengaluru, with a large and growing base of GCCs
  • Pune: strong demand from IT services, GCCs and BFSI operations centres
  • Gurugram and Noida (Delhi NCR): competitive pay from consulting, e-commerce, fintech and GCCs
  • Mumbai: strong in BFSI, media and consumer companies, with high living costs to factor in
  • Chennai: steady demand from IT services, GCCs and manufacturing, often slightly below Bengaluru
  • Tier-2 cities such as Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Indore, Kochi and Coimbatore: generally lower offers, offset by lower living costs

Always compare offers after living costs. Suppose one offer is ₹7 LPA in Bengaluru and another is ₹6 LPA in Indore. If rent and commuting in Bengaluru cost you ₹10,000 a month more, that is ₹1.2 lakh a year, which more than cancels the ₹1 lakh difference in CTC. Remote roles complicate this further, since many companies now set pay by their own band rather than by your city.

Data analyst salary by industry and company type

The type of employer often matters more than the industry label.

  • IT services companies: lower starting pay for freshers, structured annual increments, and good training for large batches
  • Global capability centres: generally stronger pay and benefits, with more emphasis on SQL, BI and stakeholder communication
  • Product companies and well-funded startups: higher pay at the top end, sometimes with ESOPs whose real value is uncertain until a liquidity event
  • BFSI (banks, NBFCs, insurers and fintechs): competitive, especially for risk, credit and fraud analytics, where domain knowledge is valued
  • E-commerce and quick commerce: competitive pay and fast pace, with heavy use of SQL and experimentation
  • Analytics consulting and KPO firms: moderate starting pay, broad exposure across clients, and quick skill growth
  • Healthcare, manufacturing, traditional retail and smaller firms: often lower bands, though domain expertise can command a premium

What moves your data analyst salary up

Salary follows the value you can show and the alternatives you have. These are the levers that tend to matter most.

  1. SQL depth: window functions, CTEs, query performance and handling messy joins confidently.
  2. Python for analysis and automation: replacing a weekly manual report with a pandas script is a concrete, visible win.
  3. BI and data modelling: building clean Power BI models with good DAX, not just dragging visuals onto a page.
  4. Statistics and experimentation: designing and reading A/B tests is a premium skill in product and e-commerce companies.
  5. Domain knowledge: credit risk, supply chain, marketing attribution or healthcare operations make you harder to replace.
  6. Modern data stack exposure: tools such as BigQuery, Snowflake and dbt open the path toward analytics engineering roles.
  7. Business impact you can describe: "my churn analysis changed how the retention team prioritised calls" carries more weight than a list of tools.
  8. Changing companies: in Indian tech hiring, a job switch often brings a larger raise than an annual appraisal, though the size varies widely.

How to negotiate a data analyst offer

Negotiation in India is expected for experienced hires and possible for many freshers, though batch hiring at large firms usually leaves little room.

  • Research the specific company and role on AmbitionBox, Glassdoor and Naukri, and ask analysts on LinkedIn what a fair range looks like
  • When asked for expected CTC, give a researched range rather than a single number, with your target near the top
  • Expect to be asked for current CTC; you can share it, then move the conversation to the scope of the new role
  • Ask how much of the CTC is fixed and what the variable component has actually paid out in recent years
  • If the fixed pay cannot move, ask about a joining bonus, an earlier appraisal cycle or a notice period buyout
  • In batch hiring where pay is fixed, negotiate on things that can move, such as team, location or start date
  • Get every agreed change reflected in the written offer letter before you resign anywhere

A short, polite script works better than a long justification:

Thank you for the offer, I am keen on this role. Based on the scope and on what I have seen for similar analyst roles in Hyderabad, I was expecting a fixed component closer to ₹8 LPA. Is there flexibility on the fixed pay, or on a joining bonus?

Then stop talking and let them respond. If they say no, you have lost nothing, and you can still accept.

Frequently asked questions

What is the salary of a fresher data analyst in India?

Salary portals commonly report fresher data analyst pay in roughly the ₹3–6 LPA range. Offers toward the higher end usually go to candidates with strong SQL, a BI tool and real projects, often at GCCs, product companies or funded startups in larger cities.

Which city pays data analysts the most in India?

Bengaluru is usually at the top of reported ranges, with Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi NCR and Mumbai close behind. Compare offers after rent and commuting costs, because a higher CTC in an expensive city does not always leave you better off.

Can a data analyst earn ₹1 lakh a month in India?

A CTC of around ₹12 LPA works out to ₹1 lakh a month before deductions, which falls within commonly reported ranges for mid-to-senior analysts. In-hand pay at that CTC will be lower once PF, variable pay and taxes are accounted for.

Does learning Python increase a data analyst's salary?

Python on its own is not a pay rise, but it often moves you into roles that pay more, because it lets you automate reporting and handle data that Excel cannot. Pair it with strong SQL and a clear example of time saved or insight found.

How much does a data analyst with 5 years of experience earn in India?

With around five years of experience, commonly reported ranges sit near the upper end of the mid-level band and the start of the senior band, roughly ₹10–18 LPA. Domain expertise, company type and city move this significantly in either direction.

Is data analytics a good career for salary growth in India?

Pay tends to rise steadily for analysts who keep adding skills and take on ownership of business metrics. Growth is slower for those who stay in pure reporting work, so plan your skill-building rather than relying on annual increments alone.
